캣츠... 이거 지난 2월에 두번이나 관람했다.

동영상으로 보는 것보다 실제로 보고 듣는 것이 훨씬 더 감동적이지만..

이렇게 가까이 동영상으로 봐도 좋네..

또 이거 공연 하고 있다는데..전국 순회공연..빅탑씨어터라고.. 야외대형극장을 만들어서..

또 보고 싶다.. 나혼자 말고.. T.T

캣츠!

브로드웨이의 4대 뮤지컬 중의 하나로서 앤드루 L. 웨버(Andrew L. Webber)가 작곡하고

트레버 넌(Trevor Nunn)이 연출한 뮤지컬.

1981년에 영국 런던에서 초연되었고 브로드웨이에서는 1982년 윈터 가든(Winter Garden) 극장에서 개막되었다.

토머스 S. 엘리엇(Thomas S. Eliot)의 시《Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats》를 극화하여

시적 상상력을 바탕으로 고양이로 분한 배우들이 인간 구원이라는 주제를 표현한 작품이다.

극장은 마치 고양이가 쥐를 잡으러 다니는 지하실을 연상시키듯 잡동사니 쓰레기더미로 꾸며진다.

뮤지컬은 흥겨운 삼바 음악에 맞춰 약 40마리의 인간 고양이들이 흔들어대는 춤으로 시작된다.

등뼈가 없는 동물처럼 꿈틀대는 고양이의 몸짓에 인간의 정서를 보여주는 춤을 접목시켜서 인간의 속성을 우화적으로 풍자한다.

특수분장은 시청각적 이미지를 극대화하여 인간 고양이를 탁월하게 형상해낸다.

극중 늙은 창녀 고양이 그리자벨라가 부르는《메모리 Memory》는 국내에도 널리 알려진 뮤지컬 아리아이다.

그리자벨라의 추억, 유명한 뮤지컬넘버 '메모리'
뮤지컬 넘버로서가 아닌 일반 팝송으로 대중에게 더 잘 알려져 있는 '메모리' (Memory).

이 곡은 뮤지컬에 생소한 관객들이 공연을 보며 '이 노래가 캣츠의 뮤지컬 넘버였구나'하고 무릎을 치게 하는 곡이기도 하다.

이 곡을 부르는 그리자벨라(Grizabella)는 다른 고양이와 마찬가지로 젤리클 고양이지만,

다른 고양이들이 가까이하길 꺼리는 인물이다.

한때는 아름다운 고양이었으나 지금은 초라한 모습으로 변해버린 그녀는,

한물 갔지만 과거에 화려했던 여인의 속마음과 옛 추억을 이 노래를 통해 표현하고 있다.

이 곡은 뮤지컬 캣츠의 넘버 중 유일하게 단독곡으로 쓸 수 있는 노래로서 작품 중간 중간에 밝은 미래를 희망하는 고양이들의 멜로디로도 쓰인다.

이렇게 한물간 그리자벨라가 천상의 세계로 승천하는 모습은 아마 이 작품의 하이라이트이지 않을까 싶다.

하늘로 올라가는 그리자벨라, 공터의 타이어의 모습에 맞추어 천상의 세계, 더 나아가 우주를 항해하는 듯한 음악은 이 작품의 숨겨져 있던 주인공의 새로운 삶의 시작을 잘 표현해주는 곡일 것이다.
